Our name, HaritzOna, is inspired by the Spanish Basque translation for “the good oak”. As the story goes, in 1736 silver deposits were discovered by prospector Antonio Siraumea in the Sonoran Desert south of Tucson. As he began to mine the almost pure silver hundreds of miners arrived to the canyon to join in the discovery of the precious metal. After news spread of the findings Chief Justice Juan Bautista de Anza traveled to the site to halt the unregistered collecting and established his headquarters at a ranch owned by Justice Bernardo de Urreas who was a Spanish Basque settler serving the Spanish Crown. Urrea named his ranch “haritz ona” due to its abundant oak tree landscape. It is believed that this ranch name evolved into what eventually became Arizona. So when pronouncing our name, HaritzOna, just say Arizona and you’ve got it.
